A header is a manifold, the purpose of which is to uniformly distribute coolant in pipe circuits in air coolers, dry coolers, evaporators and condensers in order to avoid creation of temperature layers in the passing air stream. The header consists of an oversized pipe, which ensures speed and pressure are so small as to have negligent affect upon the inlet resistance in the individual circuits.

The image shows an air cooler with four headers.
